TALLAHASSEE, August 26, 2004 -- Lawyer volunteers from The Florida Bar are available to visit Parent Teacher Organizations and classrooms and work with extra-curricular school organizations through the Bars Speakers Bureau.
Throughout the 2004-2005 school term, volunteer members of The Florida Bar Speakers Bureau will share their education and experience with Florida students to help them better understand topics ranging from personal rights, to the separation of powers, to the role lawyers play in our society.
During the school year there are other opportunities, such as Law Day, Career Day, and The Great American Teach-In, during which attorneys volunteer their time to speak with students. More than 1500 attorney volunteers have expressed their willingness to attend classrooms to discuss topics such as: the Constitution, the Role of Lawyers in America, Juvenile and Criminal Courts, Dispute Resolution, the Bill of Rights, Challenges to the Judiciary, The Juvenile Justice System, the Legal Rights and Responsibilities of New Adults, and other legal topics.
Attorneys work extensively with the extra-curricular activities in the schools by judging mock trial competitions, coordinating teen courts and educating students about their legal rights and responsibilities as new adults.
There is no fee for this service. To have an attorney volunteer come speak with your organization or classroom, contact: Gail Grimes, The Florida Bar Speakers Bureau, 651 E. Jefferson Street, Tallahassee, FL 32399-2300, or telephone 850/561-5767, or email ggrimes@flabar.org.
