What does the future hold? By Gary Pearlman
Most people and physicists have ignored the future of the physical universe. There seems to be an implied consensus that the future is not as real as the present and the past, in spite of the fact that all fundemental physical theories advanced in the past three centuriesNewtonian mechanics, general relativity, quantum mechanics, string field theoryhave insisted that there is no fundemental distinction between past, present and future. Hence, the future is just as real as the present. Frank J. Tipler in the Physics of Immortality
What it Means to be
Considered Human
Can we predict future events? Where will technology bring us? Will medicine and biology take us to the edge of immortality. Will the world survive or will the human race destroy itself in a third world war? There is one thing that can be said positively. Whatever the future is, it will be amazing. We are at a point where we can glimpse into the future and with reasonable accuracy predict where technology and science will take us. And take us seems an apt description. There is a saying, when youre riding an elephant you go where the Elephant wants. Our ride toward progress is leading us to a very profound point, where we will all have to confront not our mortality but what life is and what happens when human beings are replicated and given the ability to act on every thought or whim. We are in fact on the road to creating a world of 6 billion people with god like powers. In the following pages we will explore what the future holds and try to sort out whether or not the future can be predicted. In 1969 Zager and Evans wrote a song titled, " In the year 2525", we are it seems, close to confronting their words, only much sooner than they thought.
...In the year 5555 your arms are hanging limp at your sides your legs got nothing to do, some machine doing that for you. In the year 6565 aint going to need no husband wont need no wife, youll pick your son pick your daughter too from the bottom of a long glass tube. In the year 7510, if Gods coming he ought make it by then, maybe hell look around himself and say, guess its time for the Judgment Day. In the year 8510, God is going to shake his mighty head, hell either say Im pleased where man has been or tear it down and start again. Now its been 10,000 years man has cried a billion tears for what he never knew, now mans rein is through. But through eternal night, the twinkling of starlight, so very far away, maybe its only yesterday.
